Different Countries Along the Way

What a difference a country makes

General mood and feelings vary from country to country, depending on their history and welfare.  Americans in general are reasonably happy, we are not fighting to survive and we live in a safe environment free from major trauma.  This is quite a contrast to countries like India and Cambodia where the people are poverty struck and struggling each day to survive.  In India, day laborers stand by the side of the road hoping that they will get chosen to do a job that day, but there’s just so many people in the country, you can’t get regular employment.  There is no social security, so if you don’t earn money that day, you don’t eat.

Cambodians are on the whole depressed and beaten.  Everyone has lost family members, in some cases, their entire family due to the Pol Pot regime.

Thailand, on the other hand, is a very happy place.  It’s called ‘The land smiles’, and when you’re there, you can see why.  People seem happy with their lives - they strive for more, but are content with what they have.  This is not really true of Americans.

The Burmese people, were incredibly happy, particularly in the north.  Everyone waves and smiles and say’s hello…all the time!  They are very interested in foreigners, but in many cases are quite shy.  They are not used to seeing foreigners, especially blond haired children, so that makes us celebrities.  The country has only really been open to tourism for the past four years.

We are now in Vietnam, where people seem very happy.  They work hard and enjoy their work.
